The Currie Memorial Stone commemorates the courageous act by Robert Currie, aged 18, in his unsuccessful attempt to save two year old Charlie Friar from the path of an oncoming train. Tragically both lost their lives. The underpass tunnel was built in 1907 to prevent further accidents on the railway line.
The stone is a replacement for the original bronze plaque which was stolen.
