The listed Smollett Fountain is an important historic landmark for Alexandria sitting at the junction of Main Street and Bank Street. The Fountain’s origins date back to the 1870s. The Town Centre Masterplan identified the need and desire to see it restored and its surroundings upgraded so it can once again become a focal point for the town.
The first phase of the project involved improvements to the public realm around the fountain including changes to the road layout, creating wider pavements and improved crossing points. The refurbishment works to the fountain itself followed and were completed in 2024. This restoration work included conservation repairs to the fountain, steam cleaning, restoring the cast iron heron, re-lining the basins, re-carving missing gargoyles and the installation of a new decorative lighting scheme. Unfortunately, due the age of the structure and damage over time, it was not possible to restore water flow to the fountain.
