West Dunbartonshire Council’s CCTV team has been nominated for a prestigious police award for the work they do to keep our communities safe.

The team were put forward for a Chief Constables Excellence Award under the category of Policing Partner of the Year.

As part of their work, the CCTV team support Police Scotland with prevention and detection of crime, missing person and vulnerable person enquiries and are often the source of reporting live incidents and preventing them from escalating.

Their nomination – made by Detective Sergeant Bruce Fyfe – highlighted a number of examples of proactive work that prevented crime or harm to communities.

They include operators arranging lifesaving help for vulnerable man spotted; identifying drug dealing which led to an individual being traced and charged and alerting authorities to wilful fire raising.

The quick-thinking actions of the team contributed to safer communities by removing dangerous weapons, controlled drugs and preventing other illegal behaviours like driving while under the influence and crimes of dishonesty.

The team were also able to direct help to a person who was attempting to take their own life.

Councillor Craig Edward, Convener of Housing and Communities, said: “Congratulations to the team on this fantastic award nomination.

“This shows the true benefits of partnership working, and how by joining forces with organisations including the Police and Fire service we can ensure that West Dunbartonshire is a safe place for our residents to call home.

“We are grateful to the CCTV operators for the work they do behind the scenes.”

Councillor John Millar, Vice Convener of Housing and Communities said: “The work this team undertake is of the utmost importance in our communities.

“The job is not an easy one - this team must be on alert at all times and take quick action to protect our residents, staying calm often when difficult or disturbing scenes are unfolding in front of their eyes. It is pleasing to hear that they have been recognised with a nomination for the work they do to support our partners.”
